A cam is a shaped rotating part that makes another part rise, fall or pause in a planned pattern.

What a cam does

A cam is a rotating shape that pushes a follower, which is the part touching it. As the cam turns, the follower copies changes in its distance from the centre. The shape can create a smooth rise, a quick drop or a pause, without a person moving the follower by hand.

Why cams were useful

Machines often had a turning shaft but needed a repeated push or lift at just the right moment. Before cams, a person might have to make each movement. Engineers shaped cams to make timing automatic, so one steady rotation could control pumps, hammers, valves or tools.

A cam that lifts twice

Imagine a round cam with two matching bumps, turning once every second. Each bump pushes a follower up 2 cm, then the follower drops as the bump passes. In one second the follower rises, falls, rises and falls: two complete lifts made by one rotating part.

The reasonable mistake

It is easy to think that a cam can make any motion, because its outline looks like the whole answer. In fact, the follower, its guide and the contact surface matter too. A tall bump may give a large lift, but a sharp edge can make the motion rough and wear the parts.

Where cams are used

Cams are found in some engines, where they open and close valves at chosen times. They also appear in automatic machines, moving toys and old mechanical music boxes. In each case, the cam turns a steady rotation into a particular repeated action rather than free, random movement.
