Engineering starts with a need: make something that works. We can make a plan, build it, try it, and change it when the result is not right.
A first try is not always the last
An engineer notices a need, thinks of an idea, and makes something to help. Then they try it and look closely: what worked, and what should change? Making a better version is part of the job, not a sign that the first try was foolish.
Why try more than once?
People need objects that work safely and reliably, but an idea can look good before it is tested. Trying reveals problems that were hard to imagine, such as a bridge bending or a box opening. Engineers test so they can solve the real problem, not just guess.
A paper bridge
Place one flat sheet of paper between two books and put a toy car on it; the paper bends. Fold the sheet into a long zigzag, then place it between the books again. The folded paper holds the car better because its new shape spreads the load.
“It failed, so I failed”
It is reasonable to feel disappointed when a tower falls or a vehicle will not move. But the test has given useful information: something needs changing. Engineers ask what happened and alter one part at a time, so they can learn which change helps.
Designing a better lunch box
A lunch box must hold food, close properly, and be easy to carry. Someone might make a model, shake it, open it, and check whether anything spills. The next version could have a tighter lid or a stronger handle, based on what the test showed.
