Water pushes harder deeper down — Engineering, 7–10 years

The weight of water above creates pressure, so depth matters when engineers build tanks and dams.

Deeper water pushes more

Water has weight, and all the water above a point presses down through it. The deeper the point, the more water is above it, so the pressure is greater. This pressure pushes sideways too, not only towards the bottom, which matters when water is held by a wall.

Why depth changes the design

A container that holds deep water must resist a stronger sideways push near its bottom. If its wall were equally thin everywhere, it might bend, crack or burst. Engineers make lower parts thicker or give them extra support, because the water above is pressing there with greater force.

A bottle with holes

Make three small holes in a plastic bottle, one above another, and cover them with tape. Fill the bottle, then remove the tape. Water from the lowest hole usually shoots furthest, the middle hole goes less far, and the top hole goes least far. The lowest hole has the most water above it, so it has the greatest pressure.

Pressure is not just about the amount

It is reasonable to think that a wide, shallow tub must press harder because it contains more water. But pressure at a point depends mainly on how deep that point is, not simply on the total amount in the container. A narrow, tall column can press strongly at its bottom even when it holds less water overall.

Water pressure in the world

Dam walls are often wider at the bottom because they hold back deep water. Divers also feel more pressure as they go deeper, so diving equipment must protect them. Water towers are raised so gravity creates pressure in pipes and water can reach homes and taps.
