Every material has useful traits

Wood, metal, plastic, glass and rubber behave differently. A material may be hard, flexible, waterproof, light, transparent or good at stopping heat. Engineering means matching these traits to the job, sometimes by combining several materials.

Why the right material matters

A material that is excellent for one job can be unsafe for another. Glass lets light through but can shatter; rubber bends but may not hold a heavy beam. Engineers compare needs such as strength, weight, cost and safety before making a choice.

Making a rain shelter

Suppose you need a roof for a small shelter. First, it must stop rain, so paper alone is a poor choice. Next, it must stay up, so use rigid sticks or wood for the frame. Finally, cover the frame with waterproof plastic: two materials solve two different problems.

The mistake: strongest is always best

It seems sensible to choose the hardest or strongest material every time. But a heavy metal roof may be harder to lift and may put extra force on the walls. A clear window needs transparency, and a handle needs a comfortable surface as well as strength.

Materials in everyday objects

Look at a bicycle: metal or carbon fibres make the frame stiff, rubber grips the road, and plastic may protect the lights. A saucepan often combines metal, which spreads heat, with a plastic or wooden handle, which is easier to hold. The object works because each material has a suitable role.
