Light can bring warmth
The Sun is a star that is very far away, yet its light and warmth reach Earth. Sunlight warms things it shines on, such as your skin, a stone or a dark path. Shade is cooler because less direct sunlight reaches it.
Why look for the sunny side?
People noticed that a bench, wall or blanket can become warm in sunlight and cooler when covered. Understanding the Sun’s warmth helps explain why animals bask, why plants need light and why we choose shade on a hot day. It also helps us protect skin and keep homes comfortable.
Sun or shade?
Put two identical stones outside: one in full sunlight and one under a chair. Leave them for 30 minutes. Touch them carefully or compare them with a thermometer: the sunny stone will usually be warmer. The steps are simple: same kind of stone, same starting time, different amount of sunlight, then compare.
The Sun is not a lamp above us
It is reasonable to imagine the Sun as a small lamp because it looks like a bright circle in the sky. In fact, the Sun is a star, much larger than Earth and very far away; it only looks small because of that distance. Its light travels across space to warm our planet.
Warmth in everyday life
People use sunlight to dry clothes, warm rooms and heat water in some solar heaters. Gardeners notice which places get enough light for plants, while people choose hats, sunscreen or shade to avoid too much sun. Solar panels also use sunlight to make electricity, though they need special equipment.
