Stars shine from very far away

The Sun is a star, and it looks large because it is much closer to Earth than other stars. The points of light in a dark night sky are also stars, but they are so far away that they look tiny. Their light travels across space before reaching our eyes.

Why compare the Sun with night stars?

People noticed that the Sun gives light like the stars, but it appears far brighter and larger. They needed an explanation for this difference, so they compared how stars look from Earth. Distance provides the answer: the Sun is close enough to warm us, while other stars are extremely far away.

From the Sun to a night star

First, look at the Sun only with safe adult-approved protection, never directly. Next, notice that it is a bright round light that warms Earth. At night, look at a star: it is also a point of light, but it looks tiny. The conclusion is that both shine, while the night star is much farther away.

“Stars are tiny lights”

It is a reasonable mistake because stars look like tiny dots, while the Sun looks like a large disc. But the sky can make faraway objects look small, just as a distant lamp looks smaller than a nearby one. A star’s appearance in the sky tells us about distance, not its true size.

Stars help us find our place

For a very long time, people used familiar star patterns to help travel at night and to mark parts of the year. Today, scientists study starlight to learn what stars are made of and how space changes. We should not use a random star as a precise direction without learning the pattern first.
