Earth provides materials and energy

Earth gives us materials such as wood, metals, stone and clay, as well as water and energy from the Sun. Some supplies can grow or return fairly quickly, while others form so slowly that one human lifetime is not enough. Using a resource means we should notice where it came from and whether it can be replaced.

Why think about where things come from?

A toy, a glass and a pencil look finished in a shop, so it is easy to forget their beginnings. Before them came materials taken from forests, water, farms or rocks, plus energy for making and moving them. Thinking about this helps people avoid waste and share supplies that do not last forever.

Following one aluminium can

First, a can is made from aluminium taken from rock. Next, a factory shapes it and a shop sells it. After the drink is finished, put the can in the correct recycling bin. The metal can then be processed into new objects, so less new rock needs to be taken, although recycling still uses energy.

“Recycling makes resources endless”

It is a reasonable mistake because recycling lets the same material be useful again. But collection, cleaning and reshaping need energy, and some material is lost each time. Recycling helps us use less, yet it does not make a limited resource endless; using fewer new things also matters.

Careful choices protect supplies

At home or school, you can use a bottle again, turn off a tap and put paper or metal in the correct recycling container. These actions do not fix every environmental problem, but they reduce demand for new materials and save some energy. Good choices work best when many people make them and systems support them.
