Earth is not a solid ball all the way through. It has layers with different materials, temperatures and jobs.
What is inside Earth?
Earth is built in layers, a little like a boiled egg. The thin crust is where we live, beneath it is the hot mantle, and at the centre is the very hot core. We cannot dig to these deep places, so scientists use clues from rocks, volcanoes and earthquake waves.
Why do the layers matter?
People once imagined Earth as a simple lump of ground, but that did not explain volcanoes, hot springs or earthquake waves. The layer idea gives scientists a way to explain why the surface is solid while deep Earth is much hotter and can slowly move.
A model you can count
Imagine a boiled egg cut in half. Step 1: the shell stands for Earth’s crust. Step 2: the white stands for the mantle. Step 3: the yolk stands for the core. The model is not the right size or temperature, but it helps us remember that Earth has an outside layer and deeper layers.
The easy-to-make mistake
A common mistake is to draw the crust as a thick layer, because maps and classroom models make it look large. In reality, the crust is very thin compared with the whole Earth. It is still important: it is the hard surface that supports land, oceans and life.
Where this helps
This idea helps geologists interpret earthquake waves and understand where volcanoes get their melted rock. It also helps engineers think about the ground beneath a building. The layers are not a map of every small piece of Earth, but they are a useful big picture.
