A drawing or model can show something much bigger or smaller while keeping the same proportions.
Same shape, different size
Scale is a way to shrink or enlarge a design without changing its proportions. If every length is divided by ten, a real object can fit on a page or become a small model. The important rule is that all matching lengths change by the same factor, so the shape stays recognisable.
Why use a scale?
A full-size bridge, room or vehicle may be too large, expensive or dangerous to build just to discuss an idea. Scale drawings and models let designers plan, compare and spot problems before making the real thing. Maps and building plans grew from this need to show large spaces on manageable sheets.
Example: a model bench
A bench is 120 centimetres long and 40 centimetres high. The designer chooses a scale of 1:10, meaning every real length is divided by ten. The model is therefore 12 centimetres long and 4 centimetres high. Because both measurements changed by ten, the model keeps the bench’s proportions.
The trap: changing only one length
A reasonable mistake is to make a model shorter but leave its height unchanged, because the shorter number is the one being noticed. That produces a bench that looks too flat or too tall. Another mistake is to divide by ten for one part and by five for another. A scale works only when the same factor is used throughout.
Where it appears
Architects use scale plans before building houses, and engineers use models to study bridges, ships and machines. Map makers use scale to show a whole town on a page, while toy makers use it for trains and buildings. A scale bar tells you how a model distance relates to the real distance.
