From light to picture
A digital camera looks at light coming from a scene, such as your face, a flower or a building. Tiny parts inside the camera measure that light and turn the measurements into picture information. The device then stores that information so you can see the scene on a screen.
Why cameras were made
People wanted to keep a view of something after it was gone: a birthday, a family member or a faraway place. Drawing can do that, but it takes time and may not show every detail. A camera solves the problem by recording the light from a moment very quickly.
Take a picture of a flower
You point a tablet at a yellow flower and tap the camera button. Light from the petals and leaves enters the camera. The camera measures the light, builds colour and shape information, and stores it as one picture. You open the gallery and see a new image of the flower.
The camera does not see like you
It is reasonable to say that a camera “sees”, because its picture can look like what you see. But your eyes and brain can notice meaning, choose what matters and understand a dark scene. The camera only measures light in its view, so a picture may be too dark, bright or blurry.
Where you use it
You use a camera to remember a building, record a science observation or show a relative what you made. A barcode scanner and a video doorbell also use light to collect picture information. Before taking someone else's picture, ask first; a camera records a real person, not just a toy on a screen.
