A computer needs a small, quick place to hold things while it works. You can compare it with keeping crayons on the table while you draw.
A little holding place
While a computer is working, it keeps some information close at hand: a picture being changed, a sound being played, or a number being counted. This is working memory, not a cupboard for keeping a file forever. You can imagine it as a table where you leave things while you use them.
Why does it need this place?
A computer cannot work on a picture or a game if all the pieces are far away. It needs a quick space so it can find the next piece without searching everywhere. When that space is full, the computer may slow down, just as your table becomes awkward when it is covered with toys.
A picture in use
You open a drawing of a red boat. First, the computer brings the drawing into working memory. Next, you add a blue window, so the computer keeps the old picture and the new change there while it redraws the screen. When you save, it makes a lasting copy somewhere else. You can then close the drawing and clear the working space.
Memory is not the same as saving
It is easy to think that a picture on the screen must be safely kept, because you can see it. But seeing it may only mean that it is in working memory. If you close the app before saving, that temporary version can disappear. The mistake makes sense: the picture looks finished, even though the computer has not made a lasting copy.
Where you meet it
Memory is working whenever an app opens a photo, plays a song, or runs a game. A tablet also uses it when several apps are open at once. You may notice the idea when one app closes or slows down because the device is busy. Saving a file is different: that puts a copy in longer-term storage.
