Iron can slowly change when it meets water and air. Rust is not dirt that can simply be wiped away; it is a new, flaky material.
What rusting is
Rusting is a slow change in iron or steel. A grey or shiny surface may become orange-brown, rough and flaky when water and air stay on it. The rust is a new material, so the old metal has not merely become dirty.
Why people noticed it
People needed bridges, tools and bikes to stay strong, but rusty iron can become weak. They noticed that wet metal rusted more easily than dry metal, especially near the sea. Learning this helped people protect iron with paint, oil or a covering.
A simple rust test
Put one iron nail in a dry cup and another in a cup with a little water. Leave both for several days, with an adult helping you check them. The dry nail may look nearly the same, while the wet nail can show orange-brown spots. Water and air had more chance to change it.
The reasonable mistake
It is easy to think rust is mud because it is brown and rough, and a cloth can remove some loose flakes. But wiping away flakes does not turn the iron back into its old shiny form. The iron itself has changed, which is why rust can keep returning.
Protecting metal
Paint on a gate, oil on a tool and a cover on a bicycle help keep water away from iron. This slows rusting, so the object can remain useful for longer. After rain, drying a metal toy or tool is a small version of the same idea.
