What a telescope does
A telescope gathers light from a distant object and brings that light to your eye or a camera. Its large lens or mirror collects more light than a pupil can, so faint objects become visible. It can also separate nearby details, making the Moon’s craters or a planet’s shape easier to study.
Why telescopes were made
The unaided eye cannot collect enough light from many distant objects, and tiny details blur together. People built telescopes to solve that problem and test ideas about the sky with observations instead of guesses. Galileo’s observations in 1609 showed moons around Jupiter, proving that not everything circles Earth.
Using 20× magnification
Imagine a telescope marked 20×. First, aim it at the Moon and focus until its edge is sharp. Next, an angle that looks 1° wide to your unaided eye appears about 20° wide through the telescope: 1 × 20 = 20. The view is larger, but the telescope’s light-gathering power is what reveals faint features.
Bigger is not always clearer
It is reasonable to think that the strongest zoom must give the best view, because nearby objects look larger. But too much magnification can make a blurry, shaky image and spread the same limited light over a larger area. A useful telescope balances magnification, lens quality, steady air and the amount of light it collects.
Telescopes beyond school
Amateurs use small telescopes to observe the Moon, planets and bright star clusters from a garden or balcony. Large observatories use cameras and instruments to measure light, revealing what distant objects are made of and how they move. Space telescopes avoid the blurring caused by Earth’s atmosphere.
