Light pollution hides the stars — Astronomy, 7–10 years

Artificial light at night can make the sky bright enough to hide faint stars. The way lights are aimed and shielded changes how much of the night sky we can see.

Too much light brightens the night sky

Street lamps, signs and buildings send some light upward instead of only onto the ground. The light scatters in the air, making the sky glow and hiding the weaker stars. This is called light pollution; it is not dirt floating in space.

Why does it matter?

Astronomers need a dark sky to notice faint objects, but growing towns brought more lights and made observations harder. The problem is not all light; we need safe lighting. The useful question is where, when and how brightly light is used.

A simple lamp comparison

1. Put two lamps outside: one points straight down, the other shines sideways and upward. 2. From far away, the second lamp makes a larger bright patch in the sky. 3. Add a shield to block its upward light. 4. The ground can stay lit while less light reaches the sky.

Brighter is not always better

It feels sensible to use the brightest lamp everywhere because more light seems to mean more safety. But glare can make nearby dark areas harder to see, and upward light does not help a person walking below. A well-directed, moderate light can work better.

Finding darker skies

People who watch stars choose parks, mountains or specially protected dark-sky places, away from strong city lights. Communities can use lamps with covers, turn off unnecessary signs and dim lights late at night. These choices save energy and let more of the real sky show.
