What a galaxy is
A galaxy is a huge group of stars, gas and dust held together by gravity. Some galaxies are spirals with curved arms, while others are oval or have less regular shapes. Our Sun and Solar System are inside the Milky Way, but the Milky Way is only one galaxy among many.
Why the idea of galaxies matters
For a long time, a cloudy patch in the sky could have been mistaken for a small cloud inside our own galaxy. Astronomers needed a way to explain why some faint patches were vast systems far beyond the Milky Way. Better telescopes and measurements showed that these patches were separate galaxies, changing our picture of the universe.
Finding our galactic home
Start with the Solar System: it contains the Sun and the planets. Next, place that whole system inside the Milky Way, a galaxy shaped roughly like a flat spiral. Then compare it with Andromeda, a separate galaxy about 2.5 million light-years away. The steps show that “our galaxy” and “the universe” are not the same size.
The Milky Way is not just the bright band
When people see a pale band across a dark sky, it is natural to think that the Milky Way is a long cloud painted across space. The band is actually the view from inside a much larger galaxy: we are looking through many stars in its flat disc. The galaxy also extends in directions that the bright band does not show clearly.
Galaxies in real life
Astronomers photograph galaxies to compare their shapes, ages and movements. These observations help them map where matter is found and investigate how galaxies change over very long periods. The same images also appear in planetarium shows, observatory websites and space-agency pictures, giving people a view far beyond our own neighbourhood.
