The Sunlight Zone — the bright, busy top layer
Imagine sinking slowly down into the sea. The very top part, where the sunshine still reaches, is called the sunlight zone. It's bright, warm and bursting with life — this is the ocean you'd see if you went snorkelling.
The Twilight Zone — where the light fades away
Keep sinking past the sunlight zone and the water turns a deep, shadowy blue. This is the twilight zone, where there's just enough light to see faint shapes but never enough for plants to grow. It's cold, quiet and mysterious — and the animals here have a magic trick.
The Midnight Zone — total darkness, forever
Now we've reached a place stranger than any alien planet: the midnight zone. Here the sun has vanished completely. It is always black, always freezing, and the water above presses down so hard it could crush a car. Yet even here, in the most hostile place on Earth, life finds a way.
Giants of the Ocean — whales, sharks and rays
Not all ocean animals are small. The sea is home to true giants — creatures so enormous they make an elephant look tiny. And the biggest of them all glides gently through the sunlight zone, eating some of the smallest food in the ocean.
The Cleverest Creatures — octopus, jellyfish and masters of disguise
The ocean isn't just big and beautiful — it's clever. All through the sea, animals have invented astonishing ways to hunt, hide and survive. Some of them are so strange and smart that they seem almost like creatures from a fairy tale.
