The Caesar Cipher — shift every letter
Write the alphabet, then write it again underneath, slid three places along. Now every letter has a stand-in: A becomes D, B becomes E, and Z wraps around to C. That is the entire Caesar cipher, and the Roman writer Suetonius says Julius Caesar used exactly this shift for his private letters.
Morse Code — short, long, silence
Morse is not built to hide anything — it is built to travel. Every letter becomes a pattern of short and long signals, so a message can cross a wire, a beam of light, a whistle or a hand tapping on a table. It is the proof that language does not need paper, or even sound.
Braille — a writing system, not a puzzle
Braille belongs in this collection for one reason only: it proves that letters do not have to be seen. It is not a secret code and it was never a game — it is a full writing system that gives blind and partially sighted people direct, independent access to written language. Louis Braille built it as a teenager, and published it in 1829 when he was twenty.
Semaphore — talking with your arms
Hold a flag in each hand and put your arms in different positions: each combination is a letter. Semaphore is the only code here that you send with your whole body, and the only one that works across a valley with no equipment at all. Its ancestor, the French optical telegraph of 1794, was the fastest long-distance message system on Earth for half a century.
Substitution Ciphers — a whole new alphabet
Instead of shifting the alphabet by a fixed amount, swap every letter for any other letter you like: A might become Q, B might become F, and the pairing is your key. The number of possible alphabets is about 4 × 10²⁶ — a four followed by twenty-six digits — so brute force is hopeless. And yet these ciphers were being read routinely five hundred years ago, which is the most interesting fact about them.
Frequency Analysis — how codes get broken
This is the one that matters. Frequency analysis is not a way to hide a message — it is the way messages get uncovered, and it was the moment code-breaking stopped being guesswork and became evidence. The idea is almost insultingly simple: languages have habits, and no disguise can hide a habit.
Enigma — the machine, and the people who beat it
Enigma was a typewriter-sized machine that scrambled every letter differently, and its story is told wrong more often than almost any other in this collection. It was not broken by one genius at the last minute: it was first broken in 1932 by three young Polish mathematicians, seven years before the war, and their work was handed to Britain and France before it began. What happened afterwards at Bletchley Park was extraordinary — and it started from a Polish head start.
Binary — everything from two symbols
Binary is what every other code in this collection eventually becomes, because a machine can only reliably tell the difference between two things: on and off, hole and no hole, charged and empty. With only 0 and 1 you can write any number, any letter, any photograph and any song. The mathematician Leibniz published the arithmetic for it in 1703, more than two centuries before anything existed that could use it.
QR Codes — a code your camera reads
A QR code is a message written for machines, printed in a square of black and white blocks that a camera can read from any angle. It was invented in 1994 by a team at the Japanese company Denso Wave, led by Masahiro Hara, who needed to track car parts faster than ordinary barcodes allowed. It is the only code here designed on the assumption that it will be dirty, torn, crumpled and photographed badly.
Keeping Secrets Today — why passwords are keys
Every cipher in this collection ends in the same place: the message is safe only while the key is. Today your keys are called passwords, and the good news is that keeping them is a skill, not a talent — a handful of habits does almost all the work. Nobody is hunting you personally, and understanding what actually happens takes the fear out of it completely.
