Technology should be accessible to different users — Technology, 11–13 years

Accessible design makes digital tools usable by people with different abilities, bodies and situations. It is not a special extra added at the end: clear text, captions, keyboard control and good contrast can help many people.

Designing for more than one way

People do not all see, hear, move or understand information in the same way. Accessible technology offers more than one route: text as well as colour, captions as well as sound, and buttons that work with a keyboard as well as a mouse. The goal is not to make a separate tool, but to remove avoidable barriers.

Why accessibility matters

A tool that works only for people with perfect sight, hearing or movement leaves real users out. This became especially clear as schools, services and communication moved online, and laws and design practice began demanding equal access. Accessibility also helps people with a temporary injury, bright sunlight, noise or a slow connection.

Making a video player usable

Suppose a video player shows a red button for pause and gives instructions only through speech. To improve it, label the button with words, add captions, make the controls usable with a keyboard, and check that the text contrasts with its background. Now a colour-blind viewer, a deaf viewer and someone without a mouse have workable routes.

Accessibility is not only for a tiny group

It is reasonable to think accessibility is a special feature for someone else, especially when you do not need it today. But needs change with age, injury, language, noise and surroundings, and many improvements help almost everyone. Captions help in a noisy room; clear buttons help when a screen is small or your hands are busy.

Where accessible design appears

You can find accessibility in phones, websites, games, lifts, ticket machines and public transport. Screen readers can speak labels, magnification can enlarge details, and captions can show spoken words. Designers test with different users because a feature that looks obvious to its creator may not be obvious to someone else.
