Devices follow steps — Technology, 4–6 years

Many devices work by carrying out steps in an order, just as we follow steps to wash hands or build a tower.

Order matters

A sequence is a set of steps done in an order. A device can follow such steps to make a sound, show a picture or move a robot. If the steps change places, the result can change too. Technology often turns a plan into actions one after another.

Why use steps?

A device cannot guess the whole job from one vague wish. It needs clear steps so it knows what to do first, next and last. People use steps for the same reason: instructions help us repeat a job and notice which part needs fixing.

Making a toy car move

We want a toy car to reach a red block. First, place the car on the floor. Next, press its button so the motor starts. Then let go and watch it roll forward. If it stops before the block, put it closer or check whether its batteries have power.

The right steps in the wrong order

A child may know every step for washing hands but put soap on before wetting them, or dry them before rinsing. That mistake is reasonable because all the steps are familiar. The order still matters: the water, soap and rinsing work together in a useful sequence.

Instructions in everyday technology

Washing machines, lifts, traffic lights and games all use ordered steps. A washing machine fills, washes, rinses and spins rather than doing everything at once. When a device behaves oddly, an adult can check which step happened first and whether a step was missed.
