3D printing builds objects in layers — Technology, 7–10 years

A 3D printer turns a digital shape into a real object by adding material one thin layer at a time. It is different from a normal printer because the result has height, width and depth.

The idea

A computer model describes the shape of an object. Slicing software cuts that model into many thin horizontal layers and tells the printer where to place material in each one. The layers join together, so a flat plan gradually becomes a three-dimensional object.

Why it was needed

Making a new object traditionally needed a mould, special tools or a factory process, which can be slow and expensive for one unusual part. 3D printing made it easier to test a design or produce a small number of different objects. It is not automatically the cheapest or strongest method for every job.

Worked example

Suppose you print a small cube that is 2 centimetres high. The software divides it into 20 layers, each 0.1 centimetre thick. The printer lays down the first layer, repeats the same process 19 more times, and finishes a cube 2 centimetres high, provided the layers join correctly.

The common trap

It is reasonable to think that a digital model will always print perfectly, because the shape looks complete on screen. But thin walls, unsupported parts, wrong measurements or poorly joined layers can cause a weak or failed object. A design must suit the material and the printer, not just the picture.

Where it is used

3D printing is used for prototypes, replacement parts, art, classroom models and some medical devices. An engineer can test a handle before making thousands, while a museum can make a model of an object that is too fragile to touch. The printer’s material and size limit what it can make.
