Why some objects float and others sink — Science, 7–10 years

Water pushes up on objects. Whether an object floats or sinks depends on how its mass is spread through its size, not simply on whether it feels heavy.

The idea

Water pushes upward on anything placed in it. An object floats when this upward push can support its weight; it sinks when its weight is greater than the push. A large hollow shape can float even when the same material, packed into a small lump, would sink.

Why it matters

People needed to carry heavy things across water without losing them to the bottom. Understanding floating helped them shape boats with wide, hollow spaces that push aside lots of water. The water's upward push then supports the boat, its cargo and the people inside.

A worked example

Take a ball of modelling clay and place it in water: it sinks. Now reshape the same ball into a bowl. The clay still weighs the same, but the bowl traps air and takes up more space. It pushes aside more water, so the upward push can support it and it floats.

The common trap

Many people think every heavy object sinks, because a metal coin drops in water and a feather feels light. But weight alone is not enough to predict the result. A steel ship is very heavy, yet its hollow shape makes its average density lower than water, so it floats.

Where it is used

Boats, canoes and floating docks are designed around this idea. Engineers also use it when making life jackets, which contain material that takes up space without adding much weight. A life jacket increases the upward support from water and helps a person stay at the surface.
