How animals are suited to their habitats — Science, 7–10 years

An adaptation is a body feature or behaviour that helps an animal live where it lives. It is shaped over many generations, not chosen by one animal.

The idea

Animals have features that suit the places where they live. A polar bear's thick fur and layer of fat help it stay warm, while a duck's webbed feet help it push through water. These useful features are adaptations, and behaviours can be adaptations too.

Why this idea is needed

The problem is explaining why animals are not all built the same way. A finch that cracks hard seeds needs a different beak from a bird that catches insects. Over many generations, animals with helpful inherited differences are more likely to survive and have young, so useful features can become common.

A worked example

Look at a camel in a hot, dry desert. Step 1: it may go a long time without drinking, so saving water matters. Step 2: its wide, padded feet spread its weight on soft sand. Step 3: its long eyelashes help keep blowing sand out of its eyes. Each feature helps with a particular problem in that habitat.

The common trap

It is tempting to say that a camel grew a hump because it decided it needed one. That sounds sensible when we describe an animal's needs, but one animal cannot invent a new inherited feature. Small differences already present in a population can be passed on, and helpful ones may become more common over generations.

Where it is useful

Adaptations help us understand why a species may be harmed when its habitat changes quickly. A frog suited to a clean pond may struggle if the water becomes polluted. Scientists use this idea when protecting habitats: they look at what animals need for food, shelter, temperature and breeding, rather than giving every species the same solution.
