What it is
A circadian rhythm is the body’s repeating daily pattern. It helps time sleepiness, alertness, body temperature and some hormones, even when you are not checking a clock. The main timing system is in the brain, and light reaching the eyes helps keep it aligned with day and night.
Why the rhythm matters
Living things benefit when activities happen at suitable times: sleep at night and alertness during the day. Light is the strongest daily signal, while meals, exercise and routines also provide clues. If signals and schedules disagree, falling asleep or waking can become harder.
A worked example
Leo normally sleeps from 23:00 to 07:00. On Friday he stays up until 03:00 and sleeps until 11:00. On Sunday he tries to sleep at 23:00 but is not tired. Step 1: his internal timing shifted later. Step 2: late light and a late wake-up gave fewer early signals. Step 3: he can move back gradually by keeping a steady wake time and getting daylight soon after waking.
The common trap
A common mistake is to treat sleep as a simple switch: choose an earlier bedtime and expect sleep immediately. That seems sensible because bedtime is visible and easy to change, but the internal clock may still be later. Sleep pressure, light and regular timing all influence what happens.
Where it appears
Circadian rhythms matter when planning study, sport, travel across time zones or night work. They also explain jet lag: the environment says “morning” while the body clock still signals night. Sleep problems can have many causes, so persistent difficulty deserves advice from a qualified health professional.
