Idea

Thermal energy can move through touching particles, moving fluids or electromagnetic waves. Conduction happens through contact, convection happens when a liquid or gas moves, and radiation can cross empty space, as sunlight does.

Why

Saying only that heat moves from hot to cold does not explain how it crosses a gap or spreads through soup. Scientists separated the mechanisms to solve practical questions about insulation, heating and cooling. The three names describe the route, not three different kinds of energy.

Worked example

Heat a pan of water from below. First, the metal pan conducts energy from the hot base to cooler parts. Next, warm water rises and cooler water sinks: convection circulates energy. Finally, the hot pan radiates some energy to its surroundings.

Common trap

A common mistake is calling every movement of heat convection. That is understandable because warm air and water visibly move, but a metal spoon warming by touch is conduction, and sunlight warming your face is radiation. The material and the route decide the name.

Use

A saucepan uses conduction through its metal, convection in the water and radiation from its hot surface. Insulated walls reduce conduction, lids reduce convection, and shiny surfaces can reduce radiation. These choices help cook food while limiting wasted heat.
