Idea
A spinning object turns around a point or an invisible line called an axis. A top spins around its middle, while a wheel spins around its axle; the object can turn even while staying in the same place.
Why it matters
People noticed that round objects could turn smoothly and help with work and travel. Understanding spinning helps us make wheels, tops and handles that turn in the way we expect, instead of wobbling or getting stuck.
Try it step by step
Place a coin on a table and give its edge a gentle tap. First it rolls and also spins, so its middle moves forward while the coin turns around its centre. As it slows, it wobbles more, then stops when its turning motion is gone.
A common mistake
It is easy to think that an object can only spin if it travels in a circle. That seems sensible because the outside edge makes a circular path, but the whole object may stay in one place, like a top on the floor.
Where we see it
Bicycle wheels spin around their axles while the bicycle moves forward. Door handles, washing-machine drums and playground roundabouts also use spinning. Their parts are arranged so turning does a useful job instead of being just a motion to watch.
