Levers help lift — Physics, 4–6 years

A lever is a stiff object that turns around a resting point. Placing your hand farther from that point can make a heavy object easier to lift, although your hand then travels a longer distance.

A lever helps lift

A lever is a strong bar that can turn around a point called a support. Press one end down and the other end rises. If you press farther from the support, the lift can feel easier. You do not get something for nothing: your end moves farther while the load moves a shorter distance.

Why use a lever?

People needed to lift stones, open tight lids and move heavy things with the strength they had. A long bar resting on a stone offered a useful way to turn a small movement into a bigger lift. This idea came from solving hard jobs with simple materials. It still needs a solid bar and a firm support.

Opening a paint tin

The lid is stuck on a paint tin. Slide the flat end of a spoon under the lid’s edge, keeping the spoon’s bowl against the tin. The rim acts as the support. Press the handle down: the spoon turns and lifts the lid a little. Move around the lid and repeat until it opens, rather than forcing one spot.

“The bar makes strength”

It is reasonable to feel stronger with a long lever, because a small push can lift something that your hand could not lift directly. But the lever has not created new strength. It has traded distance for ease: your hand moves farther and the load moves less. A weak or badly supported lever can still bend or slip.

Levers in daily life

Scissors, tweezers, bottle openers, tongs and a playground seesaw all use turning parts like levers. A door handle is easier to turn near the far end because it is farther from the hinge. These tools are designed around a support and a distance. They help with particular jobs, but they cannot lift an unlimited weight.
