Balance keeps things steady — Physics, 4–6 years

An object can stay steady when its weight is supported in the right place; moving the support can make it tip.

Idea

Balance is what lets something stay upright instead of tipping. A wide base usually gives more steadiness, while a tall, narrow object is easier to knock over. A seesaw balances when the two sides are supported just right.

Why

People wanted to build towers, carry loads and sit safely without things falling over. They discovered that where the support is placed matters as much as the size of the object. Balance turns that observation into a useful way to arrange objects.

Try it

Stand an empty cardboard tube on its small end. It may wobble or fall. Now place it on its wide end: the larger base keeps it upright. Put three small blocks on top and try again. The higher load makes it less steady, so spread the blocks low and wide.

A common mistake

It is reasonable to think a heavier object must be harder to knock over. Weight can feel powerful in your hands, but it is not the only part of balance. A tall object with a narrow base may tip more easily than a lighter, wider one.

Outside school

Balance matters when stacking books, carrying a tray or parking a bicycle. Furniture has wide feet or a broad base so it is less likely to tip. Builders use the same idea for ladders, cranes and bridges, where steadiness keeps people safe.
