Energy can change form — Physics, 7–10 years
Energy helps things move, glow, heat up or make sound. It can move from one place or object to another and change the way it appears.
Energy changes form
Energy is what allows changes to happen: a ball can move, a lamp can shine and toast can warm up. It does not always look the same. In a battery-powered torch, energy stored in the battery becomes electrical energy, then light and some heat.
Why follow energy
People needed to understand why machines work and where useful energy goes. Following energy helps us choose efficient devices and notice that some becomes unwanted heat or sound. The idea came from studying engines, machines and natural systems that keep changing while energy is transferred.
A battery torch
Press the switch on a torch. First, energy stored in the battery starts the electrical current. Next, the current reaches the lamp. The lamp changes much of that energy into light, but it also becomes warm, so some energy changes into heat. The chain is stored energy → electrical energy → light and heat.
Energy is not used up
It is tempting to say that a battery’s energy vanishes when the torch goes dark. We say “used up” because the battery can no longer make the torch shine. In fact, energy has changed form and spread into the surroundings, often as heat, so it is less easy to use again.
Energy changes around us
A solar panel changes sunlight into electrical energy, which can run a light or charge a device. Food stores energy that our bodies change into movement and warmth. These examples are useful because they show real transfers, but not every change is equally efficient: some energy spreads as heat.
