Why repeated experience can guide our expectations, but never guarantee what happens next.

From cases to a rule

Induction is the move from things we have observed to a wider expectation or rule. If every swan you have seen is white, you may expect the next swan to be white. The conclusion is supported by the evidence, but it is not certain.

The gap in the evidence

We use induction because life requires predictions: tomorrow’s bus, a medicine’s effect, or the next sunrise. The problem is that no number of past successes logically forces the future to copy the past. David Hume made this gap famous.

A careful prediction

A school tests a battery model in 100 phones, and all work for two years. First, the evidence raises confidence that the model is reliable. Second, we predict that phone 101 will also last two years. Third, we keep the prediction open to revision, because one failure could appear.

Mistaking confidence for proof

A common mistake is saying, “It has happened every time, so it must happen next time.” This feels reasonable because repeated success is useful evidence. Yet evidence can make a claim likely without making it unavoidable; unusual cases and changing conditions still matter.

Science and everyday planning

Science uses induction when experiments repeatedly support a pattern, then treats it as a model rather than an untouchable certainty. You use it when checking a weather forecast, choosing a dependable route, or deciding whether a charger is likely to work. Good decisions also watch for new evidence.
