What makes something fair? — Philosophy, 7–10 years

Fairness is not always giving everyone exactly the same thing. It means finding a rule that takes relevant needs, turns and responsibilities seriously.

Idea: fairness needs a reason

A fair rule explains why people receive turns, help, freedom or responsibility in a certain way. Equal treatment can be fair when people are in similar situations, but different needs can matter too. The key question is not only “Did everyone get the same?” but “Was the difference relevant?”

Why think about fairness?

Groups need rules for sharing limited things such as time, space and attention. Without a reasoned idea of fairness, the strongest voice or the first person to grab something may decide. People have argued about justice for centuries because rules affect real lives, and a rule can help one person while treating another badly.

Worked example: three children, two tablets

Three children need two tablets for ten minutes each. Giving one child a tablet for the whole time is unequal. Giving each child five minutes is equal, but the task may need ten minutes per person. A fair plan could give each child ten minutes in turn, while another activity is available for those waiting. The reason is equal access over time.

Trap: assuming fair means identical

“Everyone gets exactly the same” feels fair because it treats people equally and is easy to count. Yet a child who cannot reach a high shelf may need a step, not the same empty space as everyone else. The important difference is whether the extra help answers a real need and follows a rule that others could accept.

Use: sharing time and materials

Fairness helps when a family shares a screen, a class uses a small number of instruments or friends choose turns in a game. Count what is limited, ask which differences matter and make the rule visible to everyone. A fair arrangement may still disappoint someone, but it should not favour them for an irrelevant reason.
