Measure how much space a box-shaped solid contains by counting equal layers of cubes and multiplying its three dimensions.

What volume means

Volume tells how much three-dimensional space a solid occupies or contains. A box can be filled with equal cubes, leaving no gaps; the number of cubes is its volume in cubic units. For a rectangular box, length, width and height determine how many cubes fit in each direction.

Why volume was needed

A length alone cannot tell you how much a container holds: a tall narrow box and a short wide box may have different capacities. Volume solves the problem of measuring space in three directions at once. It connects the amount of material or liquid with the dimensions of the container holding it.

Volume of a box

A box is 6 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high. One bottom layer holds 6 × 4 = 24 cubes of 1 cm³. There are 3 such layers, so the total is 24 × 3 = 72 cubes. Therefore its volume is 72 cm³, or 6 × 4 × 3 cubic centimetres.

Cubic units matter

A common mistake is writing cm² after finding the volume of a box. Square centimetres describe flat area, because they have two directions: length and width. Volume has three directions, so its units are cubic, such as cm³. The small 3 is not decoration; it records that three dimensions were multiplied.

Volume in real life

Volume is used to choose the size of a parcel, estimate how much water a tank holds, or calculate how much concrete fills a mould. It also helps compare storage spaces: a larger-looking container is not always the one with more capacity. The units must match the situation, such as cm³ for a small box or m³ for a room.
