Volume with unit cubes — Mathematics, 7–10 years

Volume tells how much space a solid object fills. Counting equal cubes builds a reliable way to find the volume of boxes and other block-shaped objects.

Filling space with cubes

Imagine filling a box completely with identical cubes, leaving no gaps or overlaps. The number of cubes is the volume in cubic units. A cube that is 1 centimetre along every edge has a volume of 1 cubic centimetre, written 1 cm³.

Why count inside space?

A box can look large from the outside, but its useful capacity depends on the space inside. Measuring just one edge cannot describe that space. Counting layers of equal cubes gives a fair comparison between containers and explains how much they can hold.

A box of cubes

A box is 4 cubes long, 3 cubes wide and 2 cubes high. One layer contains 4 × 3 = 12 cubes. There are 2 layers, so the total is 12 × 2 = 24 unit cubes. Its volume is 24 cubic units, or 24 u³, because all three dimensions fill the space.

Do not count only the front

A common mistake is to count the cubes visible on the front and call that the volume. It is understandable because the hidden cubes cannot be seen in a drawing. But volume includes every layer going backwards and upwards, so a front view gives only one face, not the space inside.

Capacity and design

Volume helps people design boxes, drawers, rooms, aquariums and storage spaces. A maker can estimate whether 30 cubic centimetres of objects will fit in a 40 cm³ container. The cube model works for regular shapes; uneven objects or containers may need water displacement or another method.
