How archaeologists date old objects — History, 7–10

Archaeologists need more than a good guess to say how old something is. You learn how clues such as tree rings, layers of soil and scientific tests help them build a careful date.

A date is built from clues

An archaeologist cannot usually look at an old pot and know its exact age. Instead, they compare clues: the soil layer, the material, nearby objects, or the rings in a piece of wood. Several clues that agree make the date more trustworthy.

Why does age matter?

A broken cup means something different if it is 80 years old or 800 years old. Archaeologists need dates to put objects in the right order and connect them with people, places and events. Without dates, clues from the past would be like pages in a mixed-up book.

Counting tree rings

An archaeologist finds a wooden beam and counts 120 tree rings from its centre to its edge. A living tree from the same region has a matching pattern for the last 70 rings. The patterns line up, so the beam’s tree stopped growing about 50 years before that living tree’s oldest matching ring.

The oldest-looking object

It is tempting to say that a dark, dirty or broken object must be older. That feels sensible because wear often comes with age, but soil and fire can change an object quickly. Archaeologists test more than its appearance before trusting a date.

Dating things today

The same habit of comparing clues helps outside archaeology. Museums date a painting by studying its materials, style and records, while scientists date rocks, ice and fossils with different tests. When you ask how an expert knows, you are using historical thinking.
