What a vaccine does

A vaccine shows the immune system a safe version or small piece of a germ, or instructions about it. The body practises making a response without having to face the full disease. Later, if the real germ appears, immune cells may recognise it and react faster.

Why vaccines were developed

Some infections once made many people seriously ill because the immune system had no previous practice against them. Scientists developed vaccines to prepare the body before contact with the dangerous infection. When many people are protected, an infection has fewer chances to spread to people who cannot be vaccinated or who need extra protection.

A vaccine response

Nora receives a vaccine at a health centre. First, her immune system meets the safe vaccine material. Next, it makes defence cells and remembers what it saw. Later, Nora meets the real germ at school. Her immune system may recognise it sooner, so she may avoid the illness or have a milder case.

The no-illness-ever trap

A reasonable mistake is to think a vaccine is a perfect invisible shield that guarantees nobody will ever get ill. Protection depends on the infection, the vaccine and the person, and it can lessen illness without stopping every infection. Vaccines are one layer of protection, alongside hygiene, staying home when ill and medical advice.

Vaccines are used to protect people from particular infections before travel, school activities or contact with certain risks. Health professionals keep records so they know which doses have been given and when another may be due.
