Connectors in an argument — Foreign languages, 14–17 years
How linking words show the relationship between ideas, not just the order in which they appear.
Making the link visible
Connectors tell the reader how one idea relates to another. “And” adds, “but” contrasts, “because” gives a reason, and “therefore” presents a result. Without these signals, the reader must guess the relationship; with them, the same facts can form a clear explanation or argument.
The problem of loose facts
A list of true sentences is not automatically an explanation. A reader needs to know whether the next point is a reason, a contrast, an example or a consequence. Connectors solve this navigation problem, especially in essays and presentations. They do not make weak evidence strong, but they make the intended structure easier to test.
Building a short argument
Start with three facts: “The bus is cheaper. It takes longer. I have an exam at nine.” First, choose “however” for the contrast between price and time. Then choose “therefore” for the decision that follows: “The bus is cheaper; however, it takes longer. I have an exam at nine; therefore, I will take the train.” The connectors reveal why the final choice follows.
The impressive connector
A common mistake is to choose a sophisticated connector because it sounds academic, without checking the logic. This is reasonable: advanced words can seem more precise. But “therefore” claims a result, while “however” claims a contrast. Replace each connector with “what relationship do I mean?” If the answer is unclear, the sentence needs thought, not decoration.
In real decisions
Connectors appear whenever people explain choices: reviews, campaign posts, emails and project proposals. A sentence such as “The repair costs more, but it will last longer” helps someone weigh competing facts. Notice the connector before reacting to the opinion. It can show whether the writer is adding evidence, limiting a claim or drawing a conclusion.
