English Year 3: Hello! Saying who you are
English, Year 3 (Portugal): Greet people, say your name, your age, where you are from and what you like: five small sentences that start every chat.
Five little sentences
Every chat starts small. Say hello: “Hello!” or “Hi!”. Say your name: “My name is Ana.” Say your age: “I'm eight.” Say where you are from: “I'm from Portugal.” Say what you like: “I like cats.” Five short sentences, and everybody knows who you are.
Why these words come first
These are the first words in class. You say hello to your teacher, and the teacher asks your name. When you meet a child from another country, you can use the same sentences. Add three magic words: “please”, “thank you” and “goodbye”. Small words open big doors.
A chat with the teacher, step by step
Teacher: “Good morning, Ana. How are you?” Step 1: answer: “Good morning! I'm fine, thank you.” Step 2: “What's your name?” — “My name is Ana.” Step 3: “Do you like pizza?” — “Yes, I do.” (or “No, I don't.”) Step 4: say goodbye: “Goodbye, teacher!”
“I'm eight”, not “I have eight”
Careful with your age! Some languages say “I have eight years”. English says “I am eight”. So say “I'm eight.” Never say “I have eight.” The little word “I'm” means “I am”.
Where you will use it
Every English class starts with “Hello!” and ends with “Goodbye!”. On holiday you can say who you are to a child from another country. Prepare a mini talk and say it aloud before you show it to the class: “Hello! My name is Ana. I'm eight. I'm from Portugal. I like cats. Bye!”

Correct answer: d) I'm eight. — Right! “I'm eight” means “I am eight”.
