Caring for animals safely — Ethics, 4–6 years

Animals can feel pain, fear and comfort, but they do not explain their wishes with words. We treat them gently, give them what they need and ask an adult before getting close.

Animals need gentle care

An animal is not a toy that must keep playing when we want to. It needs food, water, rest and a safe place, and it may need to be left alone. Gentle hands and a quiet voice show care.

Why animals need our care

A pet or a small creature cannot choose its home, buy food or call for help in the same way we can. People began caring for animals because our choices can protect them or cause harm. Care means noticing their needs, not only enjoying their company.

A tired dog

Luca sees a dog lying under a table. First, he stays a little away; second, he asks the owner, “May I touch him?” The owner says no, because the dog is tired. Luca accepts the answer, keeps quiet and lets the dog rest.

“It likes me, so it is safe”

A child may think a friendly-looking animal wants to be touched, especially if it has a wagging tail or comes closer. That guess is understandable, but animals can be scared, sick or protecting food. Ask the owner and let the animal choose to approach.

With pets and wild animals

This care matters with a family pet, an insect in the garden and a bird in a park. You can put rubbish in a bin, leave wild animals alone and tell an adult if an animal is hurt. Do not feed or pick up an unfamiliar animal without help.
