Ramps make lifting gentler — Engineering, 4–6 years

A ramp lets an object go up gradually instead of straight up. You use a longer path, but usually need less pushing at each moment.

A ramp changes up into along

A ramp is a sloping surface between a low place and a high place. Instead of lifting a box straight up, you push or pull it along the slope. The box travels farther, but the climb is spread out.

Why make a ramp?

People needed to move heavy stones, carts and wheelchairs between different heights. Lifting straight up asks for a strong upward force all at once. A ramp solves that problem by spreading the climb over more distance, so a person or machine can push along it.

Pushing a box up a ramp

A box is on the floor and must reach a shelf 1 metre high. First, try lifting it straight up: the whole 1 metre rises at once. Now place a 4-metre board from the floor to the shelf and push the box along it; the box still rises 1 metre, but your hands spread the effort over 4 metres.

A longer ramp is not a shorter way

It is reasonable to think a ramp removes the work, because pushing feels easier. It does not: the object still reaches the same height, and it travels farther. A very steep ramp may feel more like lifting, while a gentler one needs more space.

Ramps where people move things

You can see ramps at doorways, loading bays, skate parks and building entrances. They let wheels, trolleys and wheelchairs cross a step or reach a higher place. A ramp must be strong and not too steep, or it becomes hard and unsafe to use.
