A small push in the right place can move something much heavier. A lever helps by turning our push into movement around a steady point.

A lever turns a push into movement

Imagine a board resting on a small block. Press one end down and the other end rises. The block is the turning point, and moving your hand farther from it can make lifting easier.

Why use a lever?

People needed to lift stones, open lids and move stuck objects without having giant muscles. A lever gives a longer arm for the push, so the same hands can move a heavier load, although it may travel a shorter distance.

Lifting a toy box with a lever

Put a ruler over a small block, with a toy box on one end. Press the empty end 20 centimetres from the block; the box rises. Move your hand to 40 centimetres from the block and press again: the longer arm makes the lift easier, while your end moves farther.

A lever is not magic

It is tempting to think that a lever makes any heavy thing easy. It does not create strength: it trades force for distance. If the load is enormous, the lever may still bend, break or need more than one person.

Levers in everyday tools

Scissors, bottle openers, tweezers and a playground seesaw all use lever movement. Their shapes place the turning point and your hands in useful positions. That helps you cut, lift, grip or balance without pushing directly on the object.
