Why triangles strengthen structures — Engineering, 7–10 years
A triangle keeps its shape, so it can help a bridge, roof or tower resist pushing and pulling.
Idea
A square frame can lean into a slanted shape when its corners are pushed. A triangle cannot change shape without one of its sides changing length, so engineers use triangular braces to keep frames steady.
Why it matters
Structures must carry weight and stand up to wind, movement and small knocks. Triangular braces spread forces through several members, so a structure can be strong without using a solid, heavy wall everywhere.
Worked example
Make two paper frames from four equal strips. Push the corners of the first square: it becomes a diamond. Add one strip from one corner to the opposite corner; now the frame is two triangles, and the diagonal stops the corners sliding. A small triangle has made the same paper much steadier.
A common trap
It is easy to think that every triangle is automatically strong, whatever its material or size. The useful point is that a triangle keeps its shape when its joints and sides are firm; a weak strip or loose corner can still bend or break.
Where it is used
Triangular patterns appear in roof frames, cranes, bicycle frames, towers and some bridges. They are especially useful where a long, light structure must stay stiff; not every part of every structure needs to be triangular.
