Idea

A lever is a stiff bar that turns around a support called a fulcrum. If your hand moves a long way while the load moves a shorter way, the lever can help you lift or move the load with less effort.

Why it matters

People needed to move stones, open tight objects and lift loads that were too heavy to raise directly. A lever does not create energy or make work disappear; it lets a smaller force act over a longer distance to produce a larger force over a shorter distance.

Worked example

Put a ruler on a pencil and place a 6-coin stack 10 centimetres from the pencil. Press down 30 centimetres from the other side. The effort arm is three times as long as the load arm, so the arrangement can balance about three times the force, if friction and the ruler’s weight are small.

A common trap

It can seem that a longer bar always makes every job easier. A long bar helps only when the fulcrum and load are placed usefully; it may require a larger movement, and moving the fulcrum can change whether the lever helps or gives more speed and distance instead.

Where it is used

Scissors, bottle openers, wheelbarrows, tweezers, nail clippers and playground seesaws all use lever action. Their arrangements differ because one tool may need more cutting force, another more movement, and a seesaw needs two people to balance.
