A ramp changes the path
An inclined plane is a surface that rises gradually instead of going straight up. You still reach the same height, but you move the load over a longer distance. Because the slope spreads the lift along that distance, less force is needed at one time.
Why ramps were invented
People have always needed to move heavy things to a higher place, but a straight lift can be too hard. A ramp does not remove the work: it lets people spread it over more time and distance. That trade is useful when a load can roll or slide safely.
Pushing a box up a ramp
A 10 kg box must rise 1 metre. Lifting it straight up means supporting all 10 kg at once. A 4-metre ramp reaches the same 1-metre height, but the push is spread along four times the distance. In a simple model, the needed force is about one quarter as large, before friction is counted.
The mistake: less force means less work
A ramp feels easier, so it is tempting to think it has made the job smaller. It has not: the load travels farther, and friction may add extra effort. The ramp changes how the work is shared, trading a strong push for a longer, gentler one.
Ramps around us
Wheelchair ramps, loading ramps and mountain roads all use the same idea. A delivery worker can roll a heavy trolley into a van instead of lifting it over a step. The slope must still be safe: too steep, slippery or narrow can make the ramp difficult to use.
