A foundation passes a building’s weight safely into the ground instead of letting it sink or tilt.

The ground needs help too

A building pushes down because of its own weight and everything inside it. If that force presses on a tiny patch of soft ground, the ground may sink unevenly. A foundation spreads the push over a wider, stronger area, keeping the building level.

Why buildings need foundations

Long ago, people saw that walls built directly on soft or wet ground cracked, tilted or sank. A heavy building cannot simply stand wherever its builders choose; the ground is part of the problem. Builders began digging down to firmer soil and making wider bases, so the building’s load reached the ground safely.

A simple load test

Fill a 1-litre bottle with water; it weighs about 1 kilogram. Set it on a small 4-centimetre-square card placed on damp sand, then on a 12-centimetre-square card. The larger card spreads the same weight over nine times the area, so it usually sinks less and stays steadier.

The reasonable mistake

It is easy to think that a foundation only needs to be deep, because firm soil sounds like the answer. Depth matters, but a narrow deep post can still press hard on a small patch of ground. Engineers study both the soil and the area of the base, not just how far down it goes.

Foundations in real places

Houses, tower blocks, bridges and wind turbines all pass their weight into the ground. A small shed may need only a simple concrete pad, while a tall tower may need deep piles reaching stronger soil. On rocky ground, the design can be different from one on soft clay.
