What a fossil is
A fossil is a preserved sign of life from a very long time ago, found in rock. It may be a shell, a leaf shape, a footprint or even a bone that became rock-like. Fossils are not always the whole animal; often they are only a mark or a small part.
Why fossils matter
Before people could write or take photographs, fossils kept clues about ancient life. Mud or sand could cover a dead plant or animal, protecting its shape, and layers built up over a very long time. Scientists study these clues to learn what lived in the past and how places on Earth have changed.
Reading a footprint
Suppose a rock has three-toed prints. Step 1: notice that the prints repeat in a line, so they were probably made by walking, not by a leaf. Step 2: compare their size and shape with living animals, while remembering that the old animal may differ. Step 3: conclude carefully: the rock preserves evidence of an animal’s path, not a complete picture of the animal.
Not every mark is a fossil
A strange shape in a stone can look like a fossil, and sometimes it is only a crack, a mineral pattern or a modern footprint. That mistake is reasonable because fossils and natural marks can both look unusual. Scientists check the shape, the surrounding rock and other evidence before deciding, rather than guessing from one mark.
Fossils in the world
Fossils appear in museums, cliffs and some building stones, where they help people imagine ancient seas, forests and animals. A fossil can also help scientists compare rocks from different places. If you find an interesting one, look closely without damaging it and ask an adult or a museum expert about it.
