The world under our feet
Earth is a planet: a very large, round world travelling through space. We live on its outside, where there is land, water and air. It may feel flat when we walk across a room, but the whole Earth is curved, like a ball.
Why think of Earth as round?
People needed a picture that explained why ships can disappear over the horizon and why places have different skies. Long ago, travellers noticed these clues, and later people saw Earth from space. A round Earth helps us understand that “down” means towards its middle, wherever we stand.
A globe gives a clue
Take a ball and draw a tiny person on it. Put the person at the top and a second one at the side. Turn the ball slowly: each person still stands on the outside, and the ball’s middle is below both of them. This model shows why people can live on different parts of a round Earth.
It looks flat here
A common thought is: “Earth must be flat because the ground looks flat.” That is a sensible idea when we can see only a small piece of such a huge world. The mistake is confusing a tiny view with the whole shape; a small patch of a ball can look flat too.
Globes and space pictures
Globes are used to show where countries, oceans and continents are on the same round world. Space photographs help people study clouds, storms, ice and changes on Earth. When astronauts plan a journey or scientists watch a hurricane, they use the planet’s shape and position in space.
