Weather describes what the air is doing in a place now or soon: its temperature, wind, clouds and precipitation. It can change from hour to hour.
What weather tells us
Weather is a set of conditions in the air around us. We can notice warm or cold air, moving wind, clouds and rain, snow or hail. A weather report puts these observations together to describe what may happen next.
Why predict it?
People needed to know whether to travel, sail, plant crops or protect homes before the sky changed. Weather forecasting solves this problem by using measurements and patterns, not guesses from one cloud. It cannot be perfect because the atmosphere keeps moving.
Reading a forecast
A forecast says: 18°C at 8 a.m., clouds increasing, and a 60% chance of rain by noon. First, 18°C tells you the air should feel cool. Next, increasing clouds suggest less sunlight. Finally, the rain chance is a reason to pack a coat, not a promise that rain must fall.
Weather is not climate
It is reasonable to think one cold day disproves a warming world, because we experience weather one day at a time. But weather is a short visit, while climate is the pattern measured over many years. A cold day can happen inside a long-term warming trend.
Making everyday choices
Weather information helps decide what to wear, whether to carry an umbrella, and when to play or travel safely. Builders, pilots and emergency teams use more detailed measurements. A forecast is useful evidence, but people still need to check conditions as they change.
