Modular design — Design, 11–13 years
Modular design builds an object from separate parts that connect in a planned way. Parts can then be changed, rearranged or combined without redesigning everything.
What modular design is
Think of building bricks: each piece has a place and can join others through matching connections. A modular product works similarly, using separate units that fit together to make a larger working object.
Why designers use it
Making every version as one solid piece can be slow and expensive when people want different sizes or features. Modules solve this problem by letting one basic design support several arrangements or replacements.
A worked example
Design a reading lamp for a desk. First, make a base with a standard connector; second, add a bendable arm; third, attach either a warm reading light or a brighter task light. The same base now supports two useful versions.
The common mistake
A common mistake is calling something modular just because it has several parts. That is reasonable, since many objects are assembled, but modules need planned connections and useful independence; random pieces do not create a modular system.
Where it appears
Modular design appears in shelving, construction toys, camera lenses, computers and exhibition stands. A computer can combine different memory, storage and graphics modules, while shelves can be rearranged for a new space.
