Iteration and trade-offs — Design, 14–17 years
Design improves through repeated cycles of making, testing and changing, while balancing goals that may pull in different directions.
Idea
Iteration means using what you learn from one version to make the next version better suited to the problem. Design is rarely a straight path from inspiration to finished object. Choices also involve trade-offs: making one quality stronger may make another weaker, so the priorities must be explicit.
Why it exists
The first idea is based on incomplete information, so it is likely to contain guesses. Iteration gives evidence a chance to correct those guesses instead of treating them as facts. Trade-offs exist because materials, time, money, comfort, appearance and environmental impact cannot all be maximised at once.
Worked example
A bottle should be light, tough and cheap. Version 1 uses 80 g of plastic, survives a 1 m drop and costs €2. Testing shows the lid leaks. Version 2 adds a seal: it costs €2.20 and weighs 85 g, but survives the drop without leaking. The team accepts the small cost and weight increase because reliability matters most.
Common trap
A common mistake is calling every change an improvement. A new version may look cleaner but be slower, less accessible or more wasteful. This mistake is reasonable because “better” sounds like one simple scale. In design, compare the change with the agreed goals and evidence, not with excitement alone.
Outside school
Software companies release updates, car makers refine safety systems and fashion designers alter patterns after fittings. Product teams may compare a cheaper material with a longer-lasting one before choosing. Iteration is also used in social projects, where a service is adjusted after seeing how people actually use it.
