Size helps parts work together

When we measure a part, we find out how long, wide, or tall it is. Matching sizes can make two parts meet, slide, cover, or turn together, instead of leaving a gap or getting stuck.

Why measure?

Our eyes can guess badly, especially when a gap is small. People use measuring because objects need to fit accurately: a lid must cover a box, and a shelf must fit between two sides. Measurement turns a guess into something we can check.

Making a paper lid

A box is 10 centimetres wide. Leo wants a paper lid that reaches 1 centimetre past each side, so he adds 1 + 10 + 1 and cuts a strip 12 centimetres wide. He folds 1 centimetre at each edge; the middle is 10 centimetres, so the lid fits.

Almost the right size

A common mistake is to measure one part but forget the extra space needed for a fold, overlap, or movement. It makes sense to focus on the object itself, yet a working design must measure the whole job, including what happens at the edges.

Measuring in daily life

Before putting a picture on a wall, we measure the space and the frame. When buying shoes, checking a table for a room, or cutting wrapping paper, people use measurements so the thing fits instead of being too short or too wide.
