Choosing materials — Design, 7–10 years
A design works better when its material suits the job. You learn to notice what materials can and cannot do.
What materials are good at
Every material has useful qualities. Cardboard is light and easy to cut, rubber bends and grips, while wood can be stiff and strong. A designer chooses by asking what the object must do, not simply which material looks nicest.
Why the choice matters
The problem is that one material rarely does every job well. A paper cup can hold a drink, but it becomes weak when wet; a metal cup lasts longer but may feel hot. Designers have always compared materials to make objects safer, stronger, lighter or cheaper.
Choosing a bridge material
You need a small bridge for toy cars, using one sheet of paper or five wooden sticks. First, list the needs: it must span 30 centimetres and hold 200 grams. Next, compare the choices: flat paper bends, but folded paper gains stiffness; sticks are strong but need joining. You choose folded paper if joining is difficult.
The nicest material
A common mistake is choosing the material that looks best before checking its job. That is reasonable because colour and shine are easy to notice, while strength or water resistance may be hidden. Look at appearance too, but test the important quality first.
Materials in real designs
Clothes, bicycles and lunch boxes all use materials chosen for different jobs. A raincoat needs a layer that keeps water out, while a bicycle frame needs to be strong without being too heavy. Looking at an object and asking “Why this material?” is a useful design habit.
